The first Poesiefestival Berlin takes place, then still at Potsdamer Platz, featuring readings by, among others, Adonis, Inger Christensen, Volker Braun, and Gerhard Rühm.
At the same time, UNESCO establishes World Poetry Day, which has since been celebrated every year on March 21.
The former director of Haus für Poesie, Thomas Wohlfahrt, launches Literature Express Europe, in which 103 authors from 43 countries traveled by train on a reading and working journey. This initiative led to the Berlin Poetry Festival with "Weltklang – Night of Poetry", which has been held every year since.
