Jury

In this year’s jury of the 33rd Open Mike: Yevgeniy Breyger, Jackie Thomae, and Dana Vowinckel. On the competition Saturday, the jury will award the three prizes.

The preliminary jury – consisting of Sabina Everts, Christian Filips, Sarah Käsmayr, Emily Modick, and Beate Tröger – selects this year’s finalists from more than 500 submissions in advance.

Yevgeniy Breyger

Yevgeniy Breyger was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1989 and moved to Germany with his family in 1999. Breyger has published several volumes of poetry, most recently "Frieden ohne Krieg" (kookbooks 2023), for which he has received numerous awards, most recently the Christine Lavant Preis in 2023, the Klopstock Preis in 2024, and the Preis des Kulturkreises der deutschen Wirtschaft 2025. Breyger lives in Vienna and teaches at the University of Applied Arts. His poetry collection “Hallo Niemand” will be published by Suhrkamp Verlag in February 2025.

Jackie Thomae

Jackie Thomae writes novels, short stories, radio plays, and essays. Her novel "Brüder" (Hanser Berlin 2019) was shortlisted for the German Book in 2019 and received the Düsseldorfer Literaturpreis. Since 2020, she has been a member of the jury for the Heinrich Böll Preis of the City of Cologne. In addition to her own readings, she also moderates events by other authors. She lives in Berlin.

Dana Vowinckel

Dana Vowinckel was born in Berlin in 1996 and studied linguistics and literature in Berlin, Toulouse, and Cambridge. Her debut novel, "Gewässer im Ziplock" (Suhrkamp Verlag 2023), has won numerous awards and been translated into several languages, most recently appearing in the US under the title "Misophonia" (HarperVia 2025). Dana Vowinckel lives in Berlin.

Tabea Horst (pre-jury)

Tabea Horst studied German language and literature and comparative literature in Cologne, Paris, Bonn, and St Andrews. She is an editor for German and international literature and has been head of the fiction hardcover program at Ullstein in Berlin since 2022.

Sarah Käsmayr (pre-jury)

Sarah Käsmayr, born in 1987, studied at the University of the Arts in Bremen and at Werkplaats Typography in Arnhem (NL). She works as a book designer and graphic artist and, together with her father Benno Käsmayr, co-publishes and edits his MaroVerlag publishing house in Augsburg, which was founded in 1970. Since 2021, she has been on the board of the Kurt Wolff Foundation for the Promotion of a Diverse Publishing and Literary Scene.

Sabina Everts (pre-jury)

Sabina Everts, born in 1993, studied literature in Berlin and Italy. After several years in the book trade, she worked as an events manager for Hanser Berlin Verlag, where she also completed an internship in press and editing. She is co-founder and board member of zoraLit eG.

Christian Filips (pre-jury)

Christin Filips is a poet, director, translator, and publisher. His literary works are published by Engeler Verlag, and his theater works can be seen at venues such as the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Since 2006, he has been responsible for the programs of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin and works with choirs. In 2023, he curated Poetica for the University of Cologne (with Patti Smith and Kim de l'Horizon, among others) and received the Erlangen Literature Preis for Poetry as Translation. In 2024, he was a guest lecturer at Brown University and published translations of poems by Logan February and James Baldwin. As an editor and publisher, he oversees the series “POESIE DEKOLONIE” and roughbooks. Most recent publications: “Im Traum die Auskunft sagt: Hier!” (2023) and “Der Unsterblichkeitsclown” (2021).

Emily Modick (pre-jury)

Emily Modick, born in 1986, studied comparative literature and American studies in Mainz and Padua. Since 2014, she has worked as an editor at DuMont and Hanser, among others, and since 2023 she has been the publishing director of hanserblau.

Beate Tröger (pre-jury)

Beate Tröger lives in Frankfurt am Main and works as a freelance critic. She writes reviews for print media (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, der Freitag, Frankfurter Hefte, mare, Rheinpfalz), radio (DLF, SWR, WDR), and online for Zaesur Poesiekritik International and Signaturen Magazin. She is editor of the culture section of Frankfurter Hefte, feature writer for SWR, and works as a presenter and juror. She has been a member of the team at the Erlangen Poetry Festival since 2023, acting as an advisor and presenter. In 2025, she was awarded the Alfred Kerr Prize for Literary Criticism.
