Yaryna Chornohuz

Yaryna Chornohuz is a Ukrainian poet, writer, translator, and servicewoman in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. She volunteered as a paramedic in 2019, joined the Marines the following year, and has taken part in fierce battles defending Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022. Her first poetry collection, "How the War Circle Bends", was published in 2020. The poems are written in free verse, many of them composed during her service at the front. Her second collection, "Dasein: Defense of Presence", was released in 2023. It continues her reflections on war, loss, and the experience of life on the front lines. She received the Taras Shevchenko National Prize in Literature in 2024 and was also a laureate of the 2024 Women in Arts Prize in the “Women in Literature” category.
