Diada de Sant Jordi
Science & Poetry
Please note that the event is designed for a Catalan- or German-speaking audience.
Diada de Sant Jordi in Berlin: For the grand festival of roses and books, celebrated on April 23 in Catalonia, three Catalan poets will be guests at Haus für Poesie.
This time, the focus is on the connection between science and poetry: With the aim of making scientific culture accessible to society and promoting science-based art, the residency program Magmes was created as part of the Ciència radical project at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona. Four poets — Anna Aguilar-Amat, Lluís Calvo, Mireia Casanyes Dalmau, and Pol Vouillamoz — participated in the scientific daily work of four Catalan institutes: Institut de Física d’Altes Energies, Sincrotró ALBA, Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya, and Institut de Ciències Fotòniques.
Joan Duran i Ferrer, curator of Magmes, chooses the metaphor of an alloy to describe the close collaboration between science and poetry: Just as metals and other chemical elements can be combined to form materials with entirely new properties, science and poetry met each other. Both disciplines are characterized by an unusual approach to the world, by a desire to interpret reality and probe its inconsistencies — though with entirely different methods.
The event will be interpreted Catalan–German.
To celebrate the day, there will be a book exchange: anyone who brings a poetry collection to swap receives free admission to the event.
A joint event of the Institut Ramon Llull and Haus für Poesie.
