The role of artificial intelligence in literature is being intensely debated: Is it a new tool, an overrated hype, or will machines ultimately replace authors and translators?

What is rarely asked, however, is how AI itself engages in the critical discussion and interpretation of literature—even though ChatGPT is quite capable of producing interesting reviews and interpretations. To what extent do large language models change the position of poetry critics? Can they serve as tools, sparring partners, mixing consoles, magnifying glasses? Or does their use fundamentally lead us astray?

Literary scholar Simon Roloff, language artist Julia Dorsch, and author and translator Isabel Fargo Cole discuss with poet and zaesur.poesiekritik co-founder Hendrik Jackson the possibilities and limits of artificial intelligence for literary and poetry criticism. Through live critiques, ChatGPT and human poetry critics will compete directly with each other. The audience is invited to join the discussion.
