Poetry Talk
with Gioconda Belli
Please note that the event is designed for a German- or Spanish-speaking audience.
Gioconda Belli, a writer and poet from Nicaragua, was awarded the International Carlos Fuentes Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language in 2025. On this evening, she will speak with the writer and translator Lutz Kliche about her work and her literary career.
The conversation will trace key stages of her creative life—from her early poems to her most recent novels—and will be complemented by selected readings from her texts. Gioconda Belli (born 1948 in Managua) is one of the most important voices in contemporary Nicaraguan and Latin American literature. As a poet, novelist, and essayist, she explores questions of identity, female self-determination, corporeality, and the social and political conditions of her country. At the same time, she played a significant role in Nicaragua’s struggle for freedom: in the 1970s, she actively opposed the Somoza dictatorship and became a literary voice of the Sandinista Revolution.
The political upheavals of recent years have also profoundly shaped Gioconda Belli’s life: a few years ago, the current President Daniel Ortega, once a political ally, revoked her citizenship and forced her into exile. The evening offers the opportunity to engage with an author whose writing extends far beyond literary forms and whose voice is inseparably linked to questions of freedom, memory, and responsibility.
